When summer arrives, it brings with it more daylight, warmer weather, and plenty of outdoor entertainment offerings – all good news if you’re looking for summer date ideas. Of course, picnics are always fun but I’ve rounded up some additional warm weather activities to inspire you.
Whether you’re in search of first date ideas or are looking to spice up your current relationship, these date ideas are perfect for an al fresco rendezvous, and I’ve also given you an idea of how you can change them slightly if you’re dating virtually at the moment. So, without further ado, here they are:
01. HAVE A PICNIC
Nothing says summer like a romantic picnic at the park, beach, or your back garden! Be sure to go down the traditional route for some serious romantic cred. Grab a checked blanket, an old-school picnic basket, and some wine and goodies to share. And once the food has been devoured and the glasses are empty you can cuddle up and enjoy the perfect lazy afternoon.
Virtual Alternative – Each of you could set up a little picnic area in your own gardens, then prepare the food you’re going to eat together over a video calling app like Facetime or Zoom. Once your picnic is all made up, head back outside and enjoy eating it in the sunshine while chatting to each other. It really is the next best thing to picnicking together.
02. WATCH A MOVIE OUTDOORS
If you happen to have a projector to hand then why not set it up in the garden and have a romantic movie night? You can hang a plain white sheet from a beam or fence to act as the screen, string up a few fairy lights for ambience, and lay out a blanket and pillows to lay on or some beanbags to sit on while you snuggle up together and enjoy your favourite film. Just don’t forget the popcorn!
Virtual Alternative – Just because you can’t see each other, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a movie together. There are so many great streaming services to choose from these days, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, so you should be able to find something you and your date can watch together. Grab a drink and some snacks, put your feet up, and when you’re both ready count down from 3 and hit the play button so you’re starting it at the same time. My top tip for watching a movie together during lockdown would be to have your phone on loudspeaker so you can talk to each other without having it pressed up against your ear all the time. It’s much less of a distraction this way.
03. GIVE EACH OTHER MASSAGES
Picture this … an empty house, scented candles scattered around the bedroom, and soft music playing in the background while you get a well-deserved sensual rubdown from the person you love. Take turns giving each other massages and let the relaxation seep into every muscle. It may also lead to some other fun activities – if you know what I mean!
Virtual Alternative – Send each other a care package of pamper products to use and then unbox them together over video chat so you can see each other’s reaction to whatever’s inside. Everyone likes receiving a little token of appreciation every now and then, so this is bound to be a winner.
04. GO FOR A BIKE RIDE
If you want a more active style of date, why not grab your bikes from the back of the shed and go for a cycle around the local park. It’s a great way to spend some quality time together while getting some fresh air and exercise. This date would work well for couples not isolating together too, as you can cycle together while keeping a 2-metre gap between you. Want to make your bike ride even more exciting? Hit up a local bike shop and rent a bicycle built for two. You’ll love it!
Virtual Alternative – Plug in a pair of earbuds, pop your phone in your pocket, and go for a wander around your neighbourhood while you chat to your date. It’s almost like going for an actual walk with them – unless the earbuds fall out, of course! Since communication is important in any relationship, make sure you narrate anything you see that might be of interest to them as you walk. Just remember that putting your phone in your pocket is the key to a successful walk as it takes you away from a screen and makes the date feel a lot less mediated.
05. GROWN-UP GAME NIGHT
Here’s one of my favourite seriously hot date night ideas. If you’re lucky enough to have the house to yourselves, take advantage by setting up a grown-up game night. Light some candles, pour a little vino and play your favourite card or board game, adult-style. You could try a naughty board game, like Monogamy, or stick with an adult classic like strip poker. You can also grab a regular game and set your own steamy rules like the loser has to kiss the winner ANYWHERE they want. Who says Monopoly can’t be foreplay?
Virtual Alternative – If you’ve been chatting to someone on the dating apps and you’re wanting to take your virtual date nights to the next level, you can easily adapt any of the games mentioned above to play over video chat. And since playing them would almost certainly lead to sex if you were in the same room as each other, you could make things even steamier by enjoying a Facetime romp afterwards. If you both let your guard down a little, it can be really fun.
Here are some ideas of things you could do:
- Be bossy! Tell your partner what to do to themselves.
- Read the steamiest part of your favourite erotic novel out loud.
- Answer the call as your sexy alter ego and indulge in a fantasy that your everyday self might not.
- Treat yourself to an app-controlled knicker vibrator that your date can control from his phone. You’ll be surprised at just how quickly things will heat up!
06. DO A LITTLE STARGAZING
If you guys enjoy spending time outdoors, why not choose a nice night this summer to lay down on a comfy blanket on the grass and look up at the stars? As cheesy as it may sound, there’s nothing more romantic than doing a little stargazing while chatting away to your significant other. You’ll be amazed at all the things you’ll see up in the sky on a clear night – and there are plenty of apps available to download so you can easily identify all the different constellations. It’s so romantic. Oh, and don’t forget to make a wish if you see a shooting star!
Virtual Alternative – If you’re wanting to stargaze with your partner but they don’t live with you be sure to go outside at the same time on the same date and you can chat about what you can see on the phone. I like to do this with my partner and often find myself asking him if he can see certain things at the same time as me. It’s always super interesting to hear his answer!
07. HIRE A HOT TUB
With lockdown restrictions slowly easing here in the UK, many hire-companies are starting to re-open. So why not hire a hot tub and spend a lazy, relaxing day lounging around in the water with your love? It’s a really romantic way for the two of you to stay cool on a hot summer day.
Virtual Alternative – Light some candles and run yourselves a hot bath with plenty of bubbles. Then hop on in and Facetime each other from the tub so it looks and feels like you’re in there together. Bliss. Just make sure you use a bath board that’s suitable for standing your phone or iPad on as you don’t want to end up dropping them in the water and ruining the night!
08. PICK YOUR OWN FRUIT
Lots of local farms allow you to come in and pick your own berries during summer. Why not spend an afternoon picking your favourite? And here’s the best part … you can finish off the evening by making a yummy, romantic dessert to share out of the fruit you picked yourselves. Strawberry shortcake? Raspberry and red currant cobbler? Yes, please!
Virtual Alternative – Okay, it was slightly trickier to come up with a virtual alternative for this date idea. But each of you could go out and pick some fruit with a member of your household during the daytime and then Facetime each other later on in the evening so you can make your dreamy desserts together. Ideally, you’ll print out the recipe beforehand, or have it on a different screen to the one you’re talking to them on – that way you won’t be constantly switching between screens and pausing them. Cooking and baking are inherently messy and show a lot about how someone handles stress and challenges, so this could most definitely bring you closer together.
09. PLAY A VIDEO GAME TOGETHER
During the summer months, the weather isn’t always on our side. So if you find it ends up ruining your plans, why not set up your Xbox or Nintendo Switch and have a fun-filled afternoon playing video games instead? You could create your own world on The SIMS, challenge your significant other to a game of Super Mario Kart, or play something a little more violent. The choice is yours. I promise you’ll marvel at just how much fun you have playing together, and I’m sure your guy will be over the moon if you suggest it.
Virtual Alternative – You’d be surprised at the number of virtual date games you can play with your partner from the comfort of your own home.
